The 2010 Toyota Prius is all new with many improvements over the previous generation model. There have been improvements on the outside, inside, and under the hood. And the reason people buy the Prius, which is the fuel mileage, has been improved by 3 miles per gallon. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Toyota shaved 65 pounds off the total weight of the vehicle, making it more efficient and also giving it more power. The 1.8 liter engine is new and produces more horsepower than last years 1.5 liter engine increasing it from 76 to 98. When combined with the electric motors, it brings it up to 134. The larger engine provides more torque, allowing the Prius to maintain freeway speeds at lower rpm, boosting fuel mileage. Toyota says CO2 emissions have been reduced from a score that already was at the top of all other vehicles.

After driving the new Prius up over Berthoud pass to Winter Park, I could tell that the performance has improved. I was able to keep at highway speeds going up I-70 and over the pass. The ride can be harsh over rough roads and interior noise at highway speeds is surprisingly high. Maybe I have been driving too many luxury vehicles lately, but the noise level seemed excessive in spite of Toyotas claims to have increased sound insulation in the 2010 Prius. There are three driving modes to choose from: EV, ECO and Power. EV is all electric, for very short distances at speeds under 25 mph; ECO provides the best fuel mileage, without noticeably compromising performance; and Power, the default mode, is needed for full acceleration. I never took it out of the Power mode as most of my driving was in the mountains. I was surprised at how well the Prius gripped the road going over Berthoud pass in a snowstorm.
